These questions might not always affect you personally, but I wanted a place to discuss things that everyone usually has an opinion on, and don't necessarily have a simple right or wrong answer. I'll introduce the first question, but feel free to post a new one for people to respond to whenever you think/hear of something.
Question One: As I'm sure a lot of you have heard about, a woman in Los Angeles County recently gave birth to octuplets. However, she already had six young children, bringing the total count to 14. She's a single mom who lives with her parents in a three bedroom home in the suburbs. Last year, her mother filed for bankruptcy. Should this woman receive government help? Should her story be glamorized with gifts and sponsorships with companies like Huggies? Should child services get involved (especially given that 17 people to a three bedroom house is a bit much, and there is question as to whether ot not a woman like this is mentally stable). Most importantly, though, did the doctor violate "first, do no harm?" Should the woman have been injected with eight embryos at once in the first place, even if the risk of them all taking was small? Should the woman have undergone a selective reduction? Do there need to be rules to prevent this kind of person from easily getting fertility treatment in the future?

First of all I'd like to know where this lady got all this money to do these fertility treatments... what with 6 other children to feed, cloth, and provide shelter for. Raising one child is financially taxing enough. If I were the government I would step in starting with a court ordered psychiatric evaluation of the mother to figure out if she is mentally stable. Then I'd go into a deeper investigations as to how she plans on raising all 14 children. All I know is that I can't judge her. She might've been married when this whole thing started out and she didn't plan for her marriage to fall apart. Although I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happened. I've read that infertility can be tough on a marriage as is the whole process of fertility treatments. Then there's the added financial stress.
Anyways I do feel it's the government's duty to at least take a look and see if the children's well-being is being taken care of. I hope she has a plan and I hope she's able to raise 14 children on her own. Personally I think limits should be put on fertility science. Physically, not only is it hard on the body, it could prove fatal to the infants. I know there are some desperate people out there, but I think it's the doctor's responsibility to speak up when enough is enough. Naturally, the body has been known to produce up to four embryos, we shouldn't go past that. In fact most fertility clinics have a limit of implanting only 3. Needless to say, it's important that we realize that there's gotta be boundries or else people could die.

Now that her identity has been confirmed, it's 100% confirmed that she was already divorced when she went through this; also, the popular rumor that seems to be pretty much confirmed at this point is all fourteen children were conceived through fertilization procedures, and have the same sperm donor (not her ex-husband).
As far as fertility limits go, it's also important to point out there's a general guideline for patients under 35... she probably shouldn't have even been implanted with three embryos at her age, let alone 8.

First of all, I think she should've been mentally assessed with wanting to have octoplets in the first place. I know that it is done when people adopt children, so why does it make it any different when she wants to have her kids biologically? She's not the norm in wanting eight kids at the same time, I think that should've let people know that she wasn't mentally stable, and that they did violate their own ethics in allowing her to be implanted with eight embryoes. I know that they do that in case some of them don't take and there are other viable pregnancies to consider, especially due to her fiscal instability. If we do all thist stuff to kids being adopted, hell, even to dogs being adopted, I don't know why they wouldn't do that someone who is having kids.
I don't think anyone should glamorize her having octoplets and getting her deals with big companies. Even in a stable economy, that is still a strange thing and now it's probably not the best time either to have 8 kids. I think in different circumstances, she would've been more glorified but since the economy is going to hell, she's not getting any of that and she's being dealt with much negative publicity. I think that CPS should get involved because there are going to be 17 people in a three bedroom house. Apartments won't let that many people stay in an apartment, so why should it be different in a house? It is invasion of privacy but there is question as to whether or not she can viably care for those kids in a proper way, a way that she hasn't really shown to be working to the public eye. And yes, if she gets help from the government, the government has a right to see if they are being taken care of properly. She is already living off government money, she is more than willing to admit it, so this definitely has made a candidate to having big brother watching her.
